Rome is my favorite city. It is difficult to write about a place that contains so much--human history, beauty, light and antiquity-- and do it justice. I hope these pictures will express and convey some of the emotion and awe that I felt while photographing this breathtakingly beautiful, romantic city.

AS WE ARE---THEN
I have always loved to photograph sculpture. Two years ago I was thinking of starting a new project and thought of the sculptures I have seen and the absence of eyes---and the resulting lack of expression. This in no way has diminished my appreciation for these great works as they appear today. However, on a whim I began to wonder what they would look like if I placed human eyes in them and the series began. It has been fascinating to see these faces and expressions transform and the strange disconnect that has resulted by mixing genders and age.

Charles and Sharon Pfahl's doll collection
I took these pictures at the home of Charles and Sharon Pfahl one week before Charles died. He was a great painter--indeed he was a "painter's painter". His eye for the novel and bizarre was evident all around him--in the choice of his objects as well as how he placed them. These are some photographs of the faces he surrounded himself with.
